Site Staff Advisors
Alternative Spring Break is now accepting applications for Site Staff Advisors. Site Staff Advisors are MSU faculty/staff or graduate students enrolled in degree-granting programs. Graduate students are not eligible to serve as Site Staff Advisors for international trips.
Completed applications are due to 27 Student Services Building.
SITE STAFF ADVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION
It is important to understand that the Site Staff Advisor role is not the leader of the group, but rather to serve as a resource and “behind the scenes” support for the site leader(s). Part of the goal of the ASB program is to help its student leaders develop their leadership skills and grow as leaders during these trips. They will inevitably meet with difficult challenges, it is up to the site staff advisor to decide which of these challenge the site leader can handle on their own and learn from, and which may need outside assistance. It is the hope of ASB that site staff advisors will benefit and grow through their service work and involvement in the group as much as our participants do.
Pre-Spring Break:
• SSA are expected to attend SSA training
• SSA are expected to keep open and continuous communication between themselves and their SL
• SSA are expected to attend as many group meetings as possible (site leader and staff advisor can work together to set mutually convenient group meeting times.)
• SSA are encouraged to be a valuable resource to SL
Spring Break:
• SSA are expected to assist SL in attempting to maintain group cohesion and inclusiveness
• SSA are expected to assist SL with creating groups Community Standards
• SSA are expected develop a positive working relationship with the SL and participants
• SSA are expected to volunteer alongside ASB participants
• SSA are expected to act as a positive role model, and represent the values, goals, and beliefs of ASB and MSU
• SSA are expected to maintain frequent contact with the SL while on the trip. SL and SSA should meet together once a day to discuss important issues, the day’s itinerary, concerns, etc.
• SSA must be present at all reflections during the trip and may be expected to help lead one or more reflections.
• Site Staff Advisors are expect to immediately offer assistance to Site Leader and participants should an emergency situation arise. (Problems with flights, vans, injury, sickness, etc.)
Post-Spring Break:
• SSA is expected to complete the SSA Evaluation and return it to ASB office
• SSA is encouraged to attend a post-reflections social with their group.
